Standards-Based Report Card
The San Diego Unified School District is now using the Standards-Based Report Card (SBRC) at the elementary level. Standards describe what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level in all subjects.
The report card is designed to give parents ample and enhanced information about how their child is progressing using the following measures:
-
Proficient: meets grade-level standards,
-
Basic: approaching grade-level standards
-
Below basic: does not meet the standards
-
Advanced: exceeds grade-level standards
The report card also provides information on student work habits.
Why SBRC?
The report card is helpful in multiple ways. First, it makes sure that there is consistency of expectations from teacher to teacher. Second, it helps teachers and students focus on the standards from the very beginning of the school year, giving students a chance to get help sooner if they are not making adequate progress. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, parents will learn exactly how their student is doing based on the standards. Parents will know which big ideas and concepts their child has learned and what their child needs to work on to make sure he/she is ready for the next grade level.
